About Our Location and Community
Quick Lane at Libertyville is adjacent to Libertyville Lincoln located at 941 Milwaukee Ave, Libertyville, Illinois, 60048, at the corner of West Gold Rd and Milwaukee Ave. We serve the communities of Libertyville, Chicago, North Chicago, Gurnee, Evanston, Arlington Heights, Schaumburg, Lake Forest and Vernon Hills.
Libertyville is located just five miles west of Lake Michigan on the Des Plains River and 33 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. Libertyville is a northern suburb of Chicago and the ancestral home of the Illinois River Potawatomi Indian Tribe. Potawatomi, or "Keepers of the Fire," lived along the fertile southern shores of Lake Michigan. They are among 100 tribal nations who have settled in "Chicaugou"--the native term for "wild onion."
The Libertyville name has a rich history ever since the town was first established In early 1830’s by English settler George Vardin. Originally was known as “Vardin’s Grove.” residents changed the name to “Independence Grove” during the Independence Day celebration of 1836. A year later the name was changed again when the village received its first post office. Since the state already delivered mail to Independence Grove, the village was renamed "Libertyville."
Libertyville became the county seat when Lake County was established in 1839, and the village received yet another name change to Burlington. When the county seat was moved in 1841 to Little Fort (now Waukegan), residents quickly reclaimed the name “Libertyville."
The Ansel B Cook mansion was built in 1879 on the original site of George Vardin’s one-room log cabin. The mansion was donated to the Village in 1920 for use as a library. The library outgrew its home and in 1968 was moved to a new location at Cook Memorial Library. The Cook mansion then became headquarters of the Libertyville-Mundelein Historical Society. It was been restored to it Victorian glory and continues to operate as a local history museum. Cook Mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The village experienced rapid expansion in 1881 when the Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad extended its line to Libertyville. A period of rapid growth followed with construction of schools, churches, stores, mills, lumber yards and homes. The village incorporated in 1882 and elected John Locke as its first mayor. Locke had moved to Illinois from New Hampshire in 1836 and four years later purchased land south of Libertyville.
Libertyvile's downtown was decimated by fire in 1895. The destruction prompted city board members to require brick construction. Future development created the distinctive downtown architecture common for that period. It's icononic design landed Libertyville on the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the city received a Great American Main Street Award in 1997. The historic downtown hosts weekly farmer’s market on Thursdays between June and October, 7a.m. to 1 p.m. on Church Street across from Cook Park.
Libertyville also was home to well-known Chicago architect David Adler, whose property was donated to the city after his death in 1949. The site later became the David Adler Arts and Music Center, and in 1999 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Today Libertyville is a thriving Chicago suburb and contiues to serve as a business center for central Lake County. The village hosts a long list of activities, annual festivals and attractions for the northern suburbs of Chicago. For more information visit Libertvyville activities.
